What are chemical peels?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic skin procedure that involves the application of a chemical solution. Chemical peels are used to remove old and damaged skin cells to reveal a healthy, softer skin underneath. After you receive the treatment, your new skin will leave you glowing.

There are three types of chemical peels available, and recovery time is largely dependent on the depth of the procedure.

Light chemical peels remove the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin. Light peels use mild acids like alpha-hydroxy acid, and they are great for removing fine wrinkles, uneven skin tones, and acne.
Medium chemical peels remove the epidermis and some of the dermis, or middle layer of the skin. Medium peels use trichloroacetic or glycolic acid, and they are used to penetrate deeper into the skin.
Deep chemical peels fully penetrate the middle layer of the skin to remove deeper skin cells. Deep peels typically apply phenol or trichloroacetic acid to get rid of deeper wrinkles, scars, and other damaged skin.

Chemical peels are often applied to the face, but they can also be applied to the hands, arms, neck, or elsewhere in the body. We have many clients that come to us for back peels and this is also quite common. While we recommend repeated procedures whenever possible, it's important to speak with an experienced cosmetic practitioner prior to any treatment program, to review your skin history and come up with a treatment plan.

How do chemical peels work?

Simply put, chemical peels involve a fairly simple procedure. A chemical solution is applied to the treatment area. This could be your face, your back or anywhere else your looking to treat. This causes the skin to exfoliate. Shortly after the treatment is completed, you'll notice your skin will begin to peel off over time. This is completely normal and it's important to avoid scraping or pulling on this skin. You'll want to let the skin come off on it's own. Once the old skin cells have been removed, the new skin underneath has the chance to shine, producing that softer, smoother and glowing appearance.
